Journey to Topaz Journal Entry

Chapter 3:

Ken’s perspective. After father had paid a visit after being detained for quite a long time, he announced he was leaving to Montana to a camp. The family was heartbroken, no one new what was going to happen next. Although, Ken had an idea. He was hearing rumors about an evacuation for all of the Japanese on the West Coast. The family didn’t believe him at all. However, he dropped out of school to take over the roll of his father. He needed to step up and be able to take care of family. Being only 18 I can imagine how he must be feeling during this time. Taking care of the family and knowing they are going to be taken away very soon.

Chapter 6:

Yuki’s perspective. The small, crammed space they had to live in was first called an apartment. Yuki was very excited to live there, then she realized it wasn’t an apartment at all. It was a horse stall. Their mattresses were stuffed with hay, which was very uncomfortable. They were also starving. They went to eat supper and they were expecting a bit more food than they had gotten. They now needed to learn to appreciate the little things. For example, when Mr. Toda brought her the bag of peanuts she was ecstatic. She said she couldn’t be more happy if it was a sack of gold.  This shows that her and her family needs to start appreciating the smaller things they get because they aren’t going to be getting much for the time that they stay there.

Chapter 9:

Ken’s perspective. He has been spending a lot of time with his friends and other people lately. He seems that he is keeping a distance from bis family while he makes a decision. I know he really wants to leave the horrid camp, but what about the family. He made the decision to stay and help the family. For now, at least. He cannot abandon the family after father had told him to look after them. He doesn’t want to let down his father, or his family. The decision must have been extremely hard, but he went down the unselfish path. I believe h made a good decision. He knew Yuki and his family would be disappointed.

Chapter 10:

Yuki’s perspective. After Yuki had seemed more comfortable and getting used to everything, things got a little worse. She had received the news that her dog, Pepper, had died.  She was filled with sorrow and didn’t know what to do or where to go. She wanted space which she couldn’t get, I can only imagine all the emotion bundling up inside of her wanting to be released. Then, they had to flee camp and move to another camp. She is excited to see the outside world, but knows it is out of reach. Her emotions are all over the place and she can’t express everything she needs to. Ken is acting lonesome and out of place. Yuki wants to tell him he should apply for the scholarship, but she still really doesn’t want him to abandon them.

Chapter 13:

Ken’s perspective. Ken’s upset or has feelings locked inside of him and is taking them out on his family, or anyone else. He seems very stressed out as he makes some very smart remarks to Mr. Toda. He said, “I’m learning a lot as an orderly, and think of all the money I’m making!” (Uchida 113). Mr. Toda was only trying to give Ken some advice and Ken made this very sarcastic remark.Mother immediately said something to Ken. Ken hasn’t been around his family very much at all either. He goes to work, hangs out with his other friends, goes home, and sleeps. He doesn’t even eat at the same eating block as them. He seems to be isolating himself because he is feeling a certain way and is trying to hide it and I sense that he needs to be comforted.
